Energy is not a sector in the economy, it is the sector which allows all businesses and households rely upon.  Energy fuels our economy, literally and figuratively. Human prosperity is underpinned by the cost and availability of energy, from turning our lights on and heating our homes to fueling our our cars.    Affordable and reliable energy is essential for households and businesses.  Sound and rational energy policy is required to maintain regional and national competitive advantages afforded to the US as the largest oil and natural gas producer in the world.   Responsible and sustainable energy production and development is also required to protect the environment and ensure long-term supply availability. 

In line with these principles, Common Sense Institute’s Free Enterprise Index scores each state under the energy and environment metric based on consumer choice, affordability, reliability, and environmental sustainability.
